Madrid Fashion Week Bans Thin Models
Madrid Fashion Week bans catwalk models that are too thin from taking part in the Spanish event. Any models classed as underweight by the World Health Organisations body mass index guidelines will be banned from the annual Spanish fashion designers trade fair. The Pasarela Cibeles is an important event for the fashion industry and this is the first fashion show that has had these type of rules imposed on the models.
A woman is considered underweight by the World Health Organisations guidelines if she has a BMI (Body Mass Index) of less than 18.5 , BMI is a measure of a persons weight to height ratio. The Spanish Assosiation of Fashion Designers state they want the catwalk models to promote “an image of beauty and health” rather than an underweight look. Doctors applaude the move to promote a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) within the fashion industry and hope it spreads throughout the industry.
The Pasarela Cibeles event last year in 2005 received some negative publicity regarding fashion models that were so thin they literally had their ribs poking out. Some models argued last year that their modelling careers would be in jeopardy if they put on any weight. The World Health Organisation considers a Body Mass Index of 18.5 - 24.9 to be the most healthy BMI for a female.Fashion designer Jesus del Pozo claims that the move to ban catwalk models that were too thin in the 2006 Madrid Fashion Week was agreed upon between event organisers and the local Spanish government. Spanish ABC state although this is the first fashion event to have restrictions on models weight a recent Wedding Dress exhibition in Barcelona prevented any models under UK dress size ten (American size 8 ) from taking part.
The Pasarela Cibeles will take place in Madrid between 18th and 22nd of September 2006.
